DFAS Company Description
It's not one of the Big Four, but it is big. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) is essentially the payroll and accounting department for the Department of Defense. Annually, the DFAS pays nearly 6 million military and civilian personnel, retirees, and annuitants; processes some 14 million contractor invoices; and makes more than 7 million travel payments, disbursing about $590 billion, total. Additionally, it manages some $394 billion in military retirement trust funds. DFAS is financed by its customers rather than through direct appropriations. It operates through 26 locations worldwide. Theresa McKay was named DFAS Director in 2008.
