Department of Defense Company Description

No matter how you measure it, by aircraft, ships, or active-duty military personnel, the US Department of Defense is big. Except for Social Security, the Department of Defense -- the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, Reserves, and more than a dozen defense agencies -- is the largest component of US government spending. The 2010 budget for the Department of Defense is about $610 billion. Operations and maintenance and personnel draw the largest shares of the defense budget. Although pay has increased about 25% from 2001, funding for weapon systems has experienced a small decline. The DoD maintains a force of about 2.2 million service members and operates thousands of facilities around the world.
