Overview
Japan's economic woes put The Daiei on a diet. One of Japan's largest and most troubled retailers, Daiei (pronounced die-ay) operates about 1,000 stores through its subsidiaries and franchisees nationwide. Its retail businesses include supermarkets, discount stores, department stores, and specialty shops. Daiei, which diversified haphazardly during the 1980s, came close to bankruptcy due to its massive debts and failure to innovate; it brought in new management and implemented a restructuring plan that included closing nearly 2,000 stores. The plan has yet to pay off. Trading company Marubeni is Daiei's largest shareholder and has selected Japan's AEON to help it rebuild the company.
