Overview
Japan's economic woes put The Daiei on a diet. The company (whose name is pronounced die-ay) and its subsidiaries operate more than 1,000 supermarkets, department stores, and specialty shops. Other operations include food processing and distribution, property management, and credit card services. Daiei, which diversified haphazardly during the 1980s, came close to bankruptcy due to massive debts and failure to innovate. New management worked to stem losses and closed about 2,000 retail outlets, but it struggled to revive the business. To help remake the retailing giant, trading company Marubeni teamed up with supermarket operator AEON in 2006. Together they control about 50% of Daiei.
