Recent Developments

Drug Testing Pipeline - Pharmaceutical research companies are in various stages of testing 338 new drugs to treat infectious diseases. Among the discoveries are 146 vaccines for smallpox and staph; 83 antibiotics and antibacterials to treat infections like pneumonia and tuberculosis; 75 antivirals to treat virus such as influenza, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis; and 25 antifungals, according to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Once approved by the FDA, drug discoveries can create new long-term revenue streams for pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Shipments, Inventories Slow - US drug manufacturers are slowing production and selling down their inventories, partly to meet weaker consumer demand. The value of manufacturer shipments of pharmaceuticals and medicines dropped 10.4 percent in November 2007 from a year earlier; the value of inventories fell 1.4 percent. Demand for medicines often rises in winter when consumers are more likely to suffer from colds and flu, but illness rates were comparably low at the beginning of the 2007-08 winter season and consumer demand stalled.

Attracting Biopharmaceuticals to Ontario - Province leaders have announced $150 million in funding to attract biopharmaceutical firms, create new high-wage jobs, and boost the province's economy. Ontario's biopharmaceutical industry employs more than 9,000 and invested over $550 million in 2006 toward discovering new treatments and vaccines. Biopharmaceutical companies can apply for provincial funds through grants and loans to use for hiring new workers, building infrastructure, training, and research.

Competitive Landscape

The industry is marked by rapid advances in scientific knowledge that produce ever-more effective medicines. Profitability is determined mainly by the ability to discover new drugs. The industry is dominated by the large manufacturers/marketers that manufacture drugs, have large research operations, and also have large clinical testing, marketing, and distribution capabilities. Small companies are mainly research operations or manufacturers of non-prescription products. Because of the high value of the product, average revenue per employee is a very high $600,000.
