Overview
CSX banks on the railway as the right way to make money. Its main subsidiary, CSX Transportation (CSXT), operates a major rail system of some 21,000 route miles in the eastern US. The freight carrier links 23 states, 70 ports, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. Freight hauled by the company includes a wide variety of merchandise (food, chemicals, and consumer goods), coal, and automotive products. CSX also transports via intermodal containers and trailers (Intermodal freight hauling uses multiple modes of transportation). CSX's rail segment, which accounts for more than 90% of the company's sales, also includes units that operate motor vehicle distribution centers and bulk cargo terminals.
