Cree, Inc. (NASDAQ (GS): CREE)
Overview
Cree has created a name for itself in lights. Its blue, green, and near-ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) -- made from silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) -- are used by companies in products such as dashboard lights, market tickers, and video screens, including the giant screen in New York City's Times Square. Cree also sells SiC wafers, which yield semiconductors that work at higher temperatures and voltages than standard silicon devices, and SiC and GaN materials. Leading customers include Sumitomo (13% of sales), OSRAM, and Seoul Semiconductor (also 13%). Asia accounts for about three-quarters of sales.
