The power ball is back in Covanta Energy's court. The major operating arm of Covanta Holding, the power producer has interests in 57 power plants located in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Its plants use a variety of fuels, including municipal solid waste, wood waste (biomass), landfill gas, water (hydroelectric), natural gas, coal, and heavy fuel. Covanta Energy has 34 waste-to-energy plants in the US. These specialized plants can convert 15 million tons of waste into more than 8 million MW hours of electricity annually and create 10 billion pounds of steam that are sold to a variety of industries.
