Covanta Holding has seen the light: Waste can result in power. Led by Covanta Energy, the company is a leader in the waste-to-energy market. Covanta Holding owns or operates more than 60 energy generation facilities (primarily in the US) that use municipal solid waste and biomass, as well as fossil fuels and hydroelectric sources, to generate power. It processes about 20 million tons of solid waste per year and provides electricity to some 1 million homes. Related businesses include landfills, ashfills, transfer stations, and metals recycling. Covanta also holds interests in waste-to-energy projects in China, Italy, and the UK. Chairman Samuel Zell holds about 10% of the company through his SZ Investments unit.
