Overview
Costco Wholesale, the #1 warehouse club operator in the US, is also #1 north of the border. Costco Wholesale Canada operates about 80 membership warehouse clubs across Canada, far outnumbering its US rival Wal-Mart-owned SAM'S CLUB. To shop at Costco customers must be members (fees range from $50 to $100). The big-box stores offer discount prices for, on average, 4,000 products (many in bulk packaging), including appliances, food, furniture, office products, and software. Members (and non-members who pay a fee) can now also shop for products online. Costco (then Price Club) opened its first Canadian warehouse in Montreal in 1986 and has grown to be parent Costco's largest foreign market.
