Overview
ContentGuard plays watch dog to digital content rights. Spun off by Xerox in 2000, the company licenses digital rights management (DRM) technologies developed at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center. Its technology is designed to protect such digital content as audio, video, text, games, software, electronics technology, financial data, and business information. It is used by media, entertainment, and publishing companies with an interest in preventing copyrighted material from being illegally copied or distributed. Pendrell Corporation paid $90.1 million in cash to acquire about 90% of ContentGuard in 2011, buying out owners Microsoft and Technicolor; Time Warner retained a nearly 10% stake in the company.
