Recent Developments

Medical Equipment, Supply Imports, Exports Increase - US imports of medical equipment and supplies rose 11.2 percent in 2007 compared to 2006; exports rose 8.2 percent. Imports from 14 of the top 15 suppliers of medical equipment and supplies increased, and imports to Mexico, the top supplier, climbed 18.7 percent. Exports to 12 of the 15 top destinations for US-made medical equipment and supplies also rose.

Legislation Would Restore Right to Sue Device Makers - A bill in Congress would ensure that US law doesn't preempt state law when people harmed by medical devices sue device makers for liability under state laws. The Medical Device Safety Act of 2008 is intended to reverse the effect of a February 2008 Supreme Court decision that denies patients any legal recourse if they're victims of a faulty medical device. The correction is needed to prevent FDA approval of medical devices from becoming a green light for shoddy practices by manufacturers, according to Senator Ted Kennedy.

Squids may be Used in Prosthetics Research - Materials in the beaks of giant squids could lead to improved artificial limbs and other medical devices, according to researchers at University of California-Santa Barbara. The beaks change density from the hard tip to the softer, more flexible base, and could be used to develop prosthetics that match harder materials such as bone on one side, and more elastic materials such as cartilage on the other. Medical device manufacturers are likely to benefit from the development of more realistic prosthetic devices.

Competitive Landscape

Demand is driven by population demographics and advances in medical knowledge and technology. The profitability of individual companies depends on the ability to develop superior products. Large companies have economies of scale in manufacturing and R&D. Small companies can compete successfully by specializing in a particular market segment, or through technical innovation. Annual revenue per employee is about $200,000.
