Company Description
deCODE genetics put Icelanders' genes into the world's medicine chest. The company created a database of Icelanders' gene samples, medical records, and genealogy records, some dating back to the ninth century. deCODE is using this data to develop drugs to prevent heart attacks and fight arterial thrombosis. It also develops and sells genetic tests to indicate the risk of an individual developing type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, and other ailments. deCODE also offers its genotyping services (sample preparation and genome mapping) and other research services to third parties including pharma companies and academic researchers. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2009 and plans to sell its assets.
