Zoltek Companies wants to lighten your load. The company makes carbon fibers that can be used in a variety of applications due to their lightweight, high-strength, conductive, and corrosion-resistant properties. Carbon fibers are most common in aircraft brakes, but Zoltek has been expanding their use by employing them in composites for wind turbine blades as well as for use by the oil and gas industry. Zoltek has two segments: heat- and flame-resistant technical fibers (acrylic fibers) and carbon fibers (under the brand name PANEX). In 2007, to concentrate on its carbon fibers business, it discontinued its former specialty products unit. Founder and CEO Zsolt Rumy is Zoltek's largest shareholder. Competition
Competitive Landscape for Zoltek Companies, Inc.
Demand depends on the level of manufacture of plastic products, which is closely linked to US industrial production. Because resin manufacture is a high-volume process, the profitability of individual companies depends on operating efficiencies. Large companies have significant economies of scale in production and in the purchase of raw materials. Smaller companies can compete effectively by producing specialty resins and fibers. Many smaller companies buy commodity resins from large producers and rework them into specialty compounds. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue is about $900,000 per worker.
