Formerly a major UK building society, Woolwich today is the mortgage-lending brand for its parent, Barclays and offers fixed rate, tracker, and buy-to-let mortgages. Woolwich was acquired by the mega-bank in 2000 and continued to have its own locations and product offerings (checking and savings accounts, investment products, and more) until 2006, when Barclays announced that it planned to close some Woolwich branches and rebrand the rest under the parent name. Barclays' branches now offer Woolwich branded products to those seeking mortgages. Woolwich's Web site also guides customers through the lending process.
