With nearly 200 company-owned or franchised locations, Wimpy is one of the largest independent chain restaurants in the UK. The fast-food restaurant, which was named after a hamburger-enamored character in the Popeye comics and cartoons, serves a selection of burger, chicken, fish, and other sandwiches, including vegetarian bean burgers. The restaurants also serve a breakfast menu and a range of dessert items. Founded in 1954, the company was acquired by South African franchiser Famous Brands in 2007. The Famous Brands network consists of about 450 franchised Wimpy's in South Africa.
