White Birch Paper (formerly Brant-Allen Industries) does its part to keep newspaper delivery boys busy. The company produces about 1.1 million tons of newsprint a year through four wholly owned North American mills: Bear Island, F.F. Soucy, Stadacona, and Papier Masson. In addition to newsprint, the company makes directory paper and paperboard. White Birch Paper also operates a saw mill (lumber and wood chips) and owns some 30,000 acres of forestland. In 2005 CEO and owner Peter Brant bought out his partner, Joseph Allen, in the Bear Island and F.F. Soucy mills. He then consolidated the mills with his other paper holdings. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for White Birch Paper Co.
Timber is harvested to make paper or wood products (mainly lumber and plywood). Residential construction and repair/remodeling account for nearly 70 percent of all lumber used in the US. Demand for paper is driven partly by the general health of the economy, which influences demand for office papers, cardboard boxes, newspapers, magazines, and tissue papers. Large logging companies can have a cost advantage over smaller ones through the use of more efficient (and more expensive) machinery, but logging is a very local activity, often without significant economies of scale. To read the full description, subscribe now.
