Westmoreland Coal is ready to take its lumps -- of coal, that is. Through its subsidiaries, Westmoreland Coal produces about 25 million tons of coal annually from five mines in Montana, North Dakota, and Texas. It controls about 390 million tons of proved and probable coal reserves. Most of the company's coal is sold to power producers; less than 1% is sold to industrial companies. Some of Westmoreland Coal's customers maintain power generation facilities adjacent to its mines. In addition to its coal business, Westmoreland owns the Roanoke Valley (or ROVA) power plants, which have a capacity of 230 MW, in North Carolina.
