Western Illinois University is exactly where you think it is. And it's a public school that has an annual enrollment of more than 13,000 students at its main campus in Macomb, a commuter campus in Moline, and at extension sites throughout the state. The university offers nearly 60 undergraduate majors, some 40 graduate degree programs, and about a dozen pre-professional degrees at colleges of arts and sciences, business and technology, education and human services, and fine arts and communication. The bill to establish the university, then called Western Illinois Normal School, was passed in 1899 by the Illinois General Assembly.
