WestJet Airlines has taken off in Canada -- and beyond -- by following the Southwest Airlines business model. The low-fare carrier serves more than 65 destinations, mainly in Canada but also in the US, the Caribbean, and Mexico. It operates a fleet of about 80 Boeing 737s that feature live seatback satellite TV (from BCE's Bell ExpressVu). The carrier is working to expand its fleet to about 135 aircraft. Most of WestJet's destinations outside Canada are vacation spots, and subsidiary WestJet Vacations allows customers to book hotel accommodations along with their airline tickets. WestJet was founded in 1996. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competition

Competitive Landscape for WestJet Airlines Ltd.
Demand is driven by business and tourist travel, which depends on the economy. The profitability of individual companies depends on marketing. Large companies have an advantage in being able to provide a wider range of services, especially to corporate customers, and to afford sophisticated websites. Small companies can compete effectively by providing service to a few large customers or by serving a local market. Despite automation, the industry remains labor-intensive; average annual revenue per employee at traditional travel agencies is just $75,000. Two major factors have shaped the industry in recent years: sophisticated pricing schemes developed by the airlines to maximize profitability, and the emergence of the Internet as a widely available information and booking tool. To read the full description, subscribe now.
