Wellman makes PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging resins used in soft-drink bottles and other food and beverage packaging. It ranks among the largest PET makers worldwide, along with INVISTA and Eastman Chemical. In 2008 Wellman filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and emerged the next year, owned by a collection of former debt holders. Following that, the company sold a manufacturing facility that made polyester fibers for the textile industry, recycled polyester and nylon fibers (from reclaimed plastic bottles and film) used in furniture and bedding, and recycled engineering resins for injection molding purposes. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

    Competitive Landscape for Wellman, Inc.
Demand depends on the level of manufacture of plastic products, which is closely linked to US industrial production. Because resin manufacture is a high-volume process, the profitability of individual companies depends on operating efficiencies. Large companies have significant economies of scale in production and in the purchase of raw materials. Smaller companies can compete effectively by producing specialty resins and fibers. Many smaller companies buy commodity resins from large producers and rework them into specialty compounds. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue is about $900,000 per worker. To read the full description, subscribe now.
