An affiliate of Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group , startup Virgin America took flight just as high fuel prices and a recession caused tough times in the airline industry. With a fleet of about 25 Airbus A320 jets, the carrier began in 2007 with service from San Francisco to Los Angeles and New York and now serves about 10 destination. It competes as a low-fare carrier, but also has first-class service and extensive in-flight entertainment options. In March 2009 hedge funds Black Canyon Capital and Cyrus Capital Partners sold their combined 77% stake in Virgin America. The carrier hired investment bank Lazard Ltd. to find new investors.
