The company was one of the nation's leading producers of ethanol, a type of alcohol that can be blended with gasoline and used to fuel motor vehicles. In the US, ethanol is made primarily from corn, and VeraSun maintained production facilities across the Midwest. The company also sold a branded fuel, VE85, at service stations there and in mid-Atlantic states. Director and former CEO Don Endres owns just over 20% of VeraSun.
