Vale, the world's #1 iron ore miner and among the top three overall, has more than one iron in the fire. Iron ore and pellets account for more than half of Vale's sales, and the company accounts for a third of the world's ocean-shipped iron ore. Vale's mines also produce bauxite, nickel, kaolin, and potash. Other products include steel, ferroalloys, copper, and aluminum. It has holdings in hydroelectric power generation and in rail and shipping businesses, mainly to support its mining activities in Brazil. It grew dramatically with the 2006 acquisition of what is now Vale Inco. Investment group Valepar controls a third of Vale. The Brazilian government holds limited veto power on any permanent company changes. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competition

Competitive Landscape for Vale S.A.
Demand comes largely from the manufacturers of durable goods like motor vehicles, machinery, containers, and construction steel. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on efficient operations, because most products are commodities sold based on price. Big companies have large economies of scale in production. Accordingly, most producers of secondary products buy raw metal from the large producers. Small companies can compete by operating efficient local mini-mills or producing specialty products. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is close to $300,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
