Founded in 1861 as the Territorial University of Washington, UW (pronounced "U-dub" by those on campus) has smaller branches in Tacoma and Bothell in addition to its main campus in downtown Seattle. The university, whose mascot is a Husky, offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs through 16 colleges and schools. It also operates a health sciences center and an academic medical center, which includes the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.
