Living up to its mandate by the Kentucky General Assembly to be a "preeminent metropolitan research university," the University of Louisville (U of L) is home to the first self-contained artificial heart implant and the first successful hand transplant. A major focus of the university is health care, and the University of Louisville Hospital is a part of the school's medical programs. U of L offers associate, baccalaureate, master's, professional, and doctorate degrees, as well as certificates in some 170 fields of study.
