The company's United Utilities Water unit provides water and wastewater customer services to 3.2 million households and 400,000 businesses in Northwest England. It removes and treats wastewater from these locations and the treatment and distribution of almost 2 billion liters of water a day. United Utilities operates about 580 wastewater treatment plants, and more than 180 reservoirs. The company also provides water services internationally through outsourcing contracts and joint ventures, although it has tapered back this activity in recent years.
