United Space Alliance (USA) is a space-race heavyweight; the Houston-based prime contractor has run NASA's 173,000 pound Shuttles -- Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour, which lifted off for the final time in 2011. USA, a JV between Lockheed Martin and Boeing, was formed in 1996 in response to NASA's move to consolidate multiple Space Shuttle contracts under a single entity. USA has supported mission operations, astronaut and flight controller training, flight software development, Shuttle payload integration, and vehicle processing, launch, and recovery. It also leads training and planning for the International Space Station. USA serves the Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers, and Marshall Space Flight Center.
