The US Merchant Marine Academy was established in 1943 on the North Shore of Long Island, consolidating several maritime training facilities that were set up around the US during WWII. Like the Naval Academy at Annapolis, students at the Merchant Marine Academy are known as midshipmen. Like the Coast Guard Academy in nearby Connecticut, the USMMA is attached to the US Department of Transportation. Prospective students must be nominated for the academy by members of Congress. Graduates earn a bachelor's of science degree, are licensed as a merchant marine officer by the US Coast Guard, and commissioned as an officer in the US armed forces reserves, including the US Navy's Merchant Marine Reserve.
