UPEK takes a biometric approach to computer security. The company provides fingerprint sensors used to secure access to notebook computers. Its devices can also be incorporated into mobile phones, portable storage devices, and other handheld electronics. In addition to reading fingerprints, some of the company's electronic modules enable navigation functions. Leading PC vendors including Dell, Lenovo, Sony, and Toshiba use UPEK's TouchChip and TouchStrip chipsets and sensors. Most of UPEK's sales are made in Asia, where it works closely with PC peripheral manufacturers. The comany was acquired by AuthenTec in September 2010 for about $24.5 million.
