The UK Film Council once stood for all things cinematic in the UK. The not-for-profit group promoted the economic, cultural, and educational aspects of the UK film industry through investing in film development, production, training, promotion, distribution, exhibition, and education. It acted on behalf of the UK Government by allocating government grants and lottery funds, and also directly investing private money into film education and the industry. Established by the government in 2000, it supported work related to cinema history through the British Film Institute (BFI). The UK Film Council was abolished in 2010 as a result of government cost-cutting efforts. Many of its functions were transferred to BFI.
