The DVR (similar to a VCR, but recorded onto a hard drive instead of videocassettes) allows its about 3.3 million subscribers to digitally record up to 300 hours of TV (broadcast, cable, or satellite) or 32 hours in high definition. In addition to buying a DVR, customers also pay for the TiVo subscription service, which is essentially a high-tech TV listing. TiVo uses contract manufacturers to make TiVo-branded DVRs. In addition, customers such as DIRECTV , Humax , Pioneer , and Toshiba make TiVo-enabled DVRs under their own brands, which are then sold through retailers such as Best Buy .
