In Northwestern England, Mersey Docks and Harbour (MDHC) operates the deepwater port of Liverpool on the River Mersey, which handles more than 34 tons of cargo a year, and the Manchester Ship Canal, which offers custom services to ships carrying goods from Procter & Gamble, Shell, and Tesco. The canal operates as an inland passage for large ocean-going vessels. MDHC also manages BG Freight Line, which provides container services between the UK, Ireland, and Northern Europe and freight forwarding in Europe; offers warehousing and logistics services at the port of Liverpool; and operates a container terminal.
