The Food Emporium operates about 30 upscale supermarkets mostly in Manhattan, but also in New York State, and Connecticut. The grocery chain is a division of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. In 2004 the regional retailer launched an online shopping service (www.thefoodemporium.com), making home delivery available to shoppers in 33 ZIP codes in Manhattan, where Internet grocer FreshDirect has met with considerable success. To better compete online, the grocery chain now offers free delivery in Manhattan with $50 purchases (with some restrictions). Westchester residents are charged between $6 (next day) and $10 (same day). Rival Gristede's Foods has also launched an online grocery shopping service. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for The Food Emporium, Inc.
Population growth and consumer tastes drive demand. Because margins are low, the profitability of individual companies depends on high volume sales and efficient operations. Large companies can offer a wide selection of products and have advantages in purchasing, distribution, marketing, and finance. Small companies can compete effectively by offering specialty products, serving a local market, or providing superior customer service. Discount stores and warehouse clubs have aggressively pursued the retail grocery market, and Wal-Mart is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Other competition includes specialty food stores, convenience stores, drugstores, dollar stores, and, to some degree, restaurants. To read the full description, subscribe now.
