Japan's economic woes put The Daiei on a diet. The company (whose name is pronounced die-ay) and its subsidiaries operate more than 1,000 supermarkets, department stores, and specialty shops. Other operations include food processing and distribution, property management, and credit card services. Daiei, which diversified haphazardly during the 1980s, came close to bankruptcy due to massive debts and failure to innovate.
