A state-supported military college, The Citadel traces its roots back to the South Carolina Military Academy, which was founded in 1842. Today's Citadel maintains an enrollment of about 2,200 undergraduate cadets and more than 1,000 graduate students; about a third go on to military careers. The Citadel has 14 academic departments offering bachelor's and master's degrees in 17 areas as well as a continuing education program. Previously all-male, the school was challenged when Shannon Faulkner sued for admission to the college in 1993; as a result, about six percent of Citadel cadets are female. Major General John Grinalds retired as president in 2005; he was replaced in 2006 by Lieutenant General John W. Rosa. To read the full description, subscribe now.
