Recent grant recipients include the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Oberlin College, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The foundation was created in 1969 when Paul Mellon and Ailsa Mellon Bruce, the son and daughter of banking titan Andrew W. Mellon, merged their charitable foundations (Old Dominion Foundation and Avalon Foundation).
