Interpreting the mythology behind these Titans isn't so hard if you know something about football. Tennessee Football owns and operates the Tennessee Titans pro football team that represents Nashville in the National Football League. A charter member of the American Football League, the franchise was founded by Texas oilman Bud Adams as the Houston Oilers in 1959 and joined the NFL in 1970. Adams moved the team to the Volunteer State in 1997, originally playing in Memphis before settling in Nashville (and changing its name) the following year. The Titans made its first and only appearance in the Super Bowl at the end of the 1999 season, losing to the St. Louis Rams. Adams continues to control the team. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Teams in smaller markets, along with less popular sports and minor league teams, can compete by building fan loyalty through local marketing promotions and an appeal to civic pride.
