The company's core business unit, U.S. Cellular, serves about 6 million customers in 26 states; key markets are located in the central and mid-Atlantic regions. The company also offers fixed-line and broadband Internet services in rural and suburban markets in 28 states through its TDS Telecom and TDS Metrocom subsidiaries. TDS Telecom provides local service to more than 750,000 access lines through more than 100 incumbent local-exchange carriers (ILEC). TDS Metrocom, a competitive local-exchange carrier (CLEC), has more than 350,000 lines.
