Company Description
Retail warrior Takashimaya Company has the honor of being Japan's oldest department store chain. Takashimaya has 20 stores throughout Japan and two overseas (Singapore, and Taiwan), after closing its New York store; it also sells its products through catalogs and has its own credit card. In addition to its department stores, which account for 90% of revenue, the company is involved in shopping center development, consumer finance, and other businesses through 30-plus subsidiaries. To boost sales, Takashimaya is renovating some of its stores and organizes cultural and art exhibitions at its stores. The retailer began operations in Kyoto as a kimono shop in 1831 and opened its first department store in 1922.
