Company Description

Syms sells fancy names at not-so-fancy prices. The company sells designer-label clothing through about 50 Syms and Filene's Basement (acquired in 2009) stores in some 15 states. The stores cater predominantly to middle-income women with branded slacks, skirts, blazers, and dresses with such labels as Liz Claiborne and to men by offering suits, sports jackets, slacks, shoes, and tuxedos. The apparel retailer also sells children's casual clothing and formalwear, as well as handbags, luggage, and other accessories. Sym (and its subsidiary Filene's Basement) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2011 and plans to liquidate the business.
