The regulated utility distributes water to about 252,000 residential customers and some 18,000 businesses, (a population about 650,000 people), in the London boroughs of Croydon, Merton, and Sutton, as well as East Surrey and parts of Kent and Sussex. Formerly a subsidiary of East Surrey Holdings , the company was acquired by private equity firm Terra Firma Capital Partners in 2005 when Terra Firma was required to buy the parent company in order to obtain gas company Phoenix Natural Gas .
