Established in 1995 and affiliated with the Department of Transportation, the STB resolves railroad rate and service disputes and reviews potential rail mergers, line sales, construction, and abandonments. The board additionally reviews select trucking company, moving van, and ocean shipping company rate matters; some intercity passenger bus company matters; and certain pipeline rates and services not regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
