The court, which receives about 7,000 cases to evaluate per term, includes the Chief Justice of the US and eight associate justices. The president appoints Supreme Court members, which are approved by the Senate. The court reviews the cases filed by state and federal courts and decides which ones to hear. Established under the Judiciary Act of 1789, the Supreme Court began reviewing cases in 1790 in the Merchants Exchange Building in New York City, the former US capital.
