Stratasys doesn't make the LEGO pieces strewn across your kid's bedroom, but it does make rapid prototyping systems that designers and engineers -- including the makers of LEGO toys -- use to get products to market faster. The company's Insight software takes a conceptual model generated from a CAD workstation and creates a series of cross-sections to form a 3-D blueprint. Stratasys' fused deposition modeling (FDM) machines use the blueprint to create physical models by building up layers of wax and plastic polymers.
