With confidence in the future of oil discovery, Steen River Oil & Gas (formerly JED Oil) has a strategy is to develop and operate low risk and low cost oil and natural gas assets in Western Canada, particularly ones near proven fields in Alberta, and in the US Rockies. Steen River's predecessor, JED Oil, experienced financial difficulties during the downturn of 2008 and the company sought protection from creditors under the Canadian Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. Under protection similar to Chapter 11 in the US, all stock and assets of JED Oil were acquired by one of its creditors, Caribou Resources, a Canadian oil and gas exploration company. Caribou renamed the company Steen River.
