SAIL helps keep India's ship of industry afloat. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is among India's biggest steelmakers. The company's main steel products include flat products (coils, plates, and sheets), structurals (angles, bars, and rods), rail products (high conductivity rails, light rails, and heavy rails), and tubular products (welded pipes). Though it controls about a third of Indian steel production, SAIL is no longer the country's largest steel maker after Tata Steel's takeover of Corus went through. It hopes to raise its production from about 15 million tons to more than 25 million by 2010. The Government of India owns 86% of the company. To read the full description, subscribe now.

    Competition

Competitive Landscape for Steel Authority of India Limited
Demand comes largely from the manufacturers of durable goods like motor vehicles, machinery, containers, and construction steel. The profitability of individual companies depends largely on efficient operations, because most products are commodities sold based on price. Big companies have large economies of scale in production. Accordingly, most producers of secondary products buy raw metal from the large producers. Small companies can compete by operating efficient local mini-mills or producing specialty products. The industry is capital-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is close to $300,000. To read the full description, subscribe now.
