Standard Microsystems (SMSC) knows the ins and outs of chips. The fabless company (it farms out production to contract manufacturers) develops input/output (I/O) chips, which perform basic control and interface functions inside of, or between, PCs and peripherals, such as keyboards and disk drives. Its I/O chips are used by PC makers, including Dell and HP. SMSC also makes Universal Serial Bus (USB) and Ethernet networking devices, as well as products for portable electronics and automotive applications. Other customers include AUDI, Toyota, Samsung Electronics, and Sony. Most of the company's sales come from Asia.
