St. Jude Children's Research Hospital studies and treats catastrophic diseases in children, especially pediatric cancers. The hospital, which only has about 80 beds, annually treats more than 5,900 children, most of whom are treated on an outpatient basis as part of its research efforts into finding cures and more effective treatments. The hospital not only helps children with their health, it also helps their parents: It pays all expenses that not covered by insurance and doesn't require payment from patients without insurance. Entertainer Danny Thomas founded St. Jude in 1962; Thomas also founded the fundraising organization for the hospital, the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC).
