St. John Hospital & Medical Center is part of the larger Detroit area-based St. John Health regional health care system. The 800-bed teaching hospital is affiliated with Wayne State University. Besides providing acute and trauma care, St. John operates specialized cancer and pediatric centers, a hip and knee center, an inpatient mental health unit, and a Parkinson's Disease clinic. It also operates the only emergency trauma center on Detroit's East Side. The hospital was established in 1952 and has grown to include a 200-physician medical team specializing in more than 50 medical and surgical fields.
