Spring Air International (SAI) is calling you to bed. The successor of mattress maker Spring Air Company, SAI controls the Spring Air brand globally. The newly-formed firm has about 10 licensees in the US and about 10 abroad. The original Spring Air was founded in 1926 by mattress innovator Francis Karr, who introduced an offset-coil that adjusts to sleepers' weights. It merged with its largest licensee, Florida-based Consolidated Bedding, and folded in other licensees in 2007. In May 2009 the company abruptly ceased operations and in June emerged under new ownership and management as SAI. Spring Air brand products are sold worldwide through furniture retailers, department stores, and bedding stores. To read the full description, subscribe now.

Competitive Landscape for Spring Air International LLC
The volume of home furniture sold depends heavily on the level of home sales, while office furniture sales depend on the health of the US economy. The profitability of individual companies is closely linked to volume, since many costs are fixed. Small companies can compete effectively if they produce specialty items or high-quality workmanship that can sell for a premium price. Imports are a major competitive factor, totaling more than $26 billion a year, and many US manufacturers have factories overseas, where labor and production costs are lower than in the US. Foreign competition and production overcapacity have combined to keep prices low. Additionally, despite automation, the made-to-order nature of much of the business means that the industry is fairly labor-intensive: average annual revenue per worker is around $250,000.
